Statement

Hello King County Voters. My name is Norman Sigler. Thank you for taking the time to learn about me and my reasons for wanting to be your next Port of Seattle Commissioner in position number 1.

I plan to lead with bold actions such as moving to carbon neutrality by 2030; designating a portion of the operating budget to eliminate Port pollution and designating a percentage of the Port’s profit to mitigate environmental injustices in communities impacted by Port operations.

I moved here in 2003 to be the Manager of Finance and Contracts for the then $55 million engine budget at Alaska Airlines. This was my 3rd time working for an airline after getting my MBA in Finance & Accounting from the University of Michigan. My aviation experience also includes planning new airline routes and building airline partnerships. I loved working in the airline industry because of the exposure to so many different people and places and because the engineering of flying is magical. SeaTac International Airport is a magical place and represents about 75% of all Port of Seattle operations that also includes a state-of-the-art regional container port alliance, cruise ship terminals, the marina that houses the Alaskan fishing fleet, and a park. The Port’s current operating budget is $680 million that includes $76 million a year in support from your property taxes.

CLEAR-Consulting.Biz, my executive search firm, helps Puget Sound social profits diversify their leadership teams and as a Port Commissioner, I’ll use my career skills to bring leaders together from neighboring counties and state levels to create more Green projects, invest in infrastructure that connects our regions, and do more business with diverse, environmentally friendly companies. I bring experience managing maintenance contracts for engine repairs, planning new routes, controlling costs, and building airline partnerships at Alaska Airlines, Northwest Airlines, and Continental Airlines. My past work as a healthcare strategy consultant for Blue Cross/Blue Shield and as an environmental scientist assessing commercial properties for environmental hazards means I will be the only Port Commissioner to bring institutional knowledge on day one from aviation, healthcare, and the environmental sectors.

SeaTac International Airport represents is the Port's greatest asset. Removing pollution from the supply chain of air travel is imperative if we want to continue to enjoy convenient international and domestic air service. We must also provide good union living wage jobs for our Port workers and workers of businesses in the aviation, fishing, and shipping industries.

I am proudly endorsed by the 34thLegislative District Democrats (Burien, Vashon Island, West Seattle, White Center).

110 years ago, residents of this county created the Port of Seattle to build the foundation of the economy we enjoy today.

I humbly ask for your vote to help lay the foundation for the Port’s next 110 years. Thank you!

My focus as a Commissioner will be:

Environmental & Economic Justice –   I will work with communities around the Port to ensure there is no harm done by Port actions and actually that the Port contributes to an enhanced quality of life for its neighbors. I support putting the proposed new parking garage on the site of the current employee parking lot. This will save trees and wildlife habitat currently on the site for the proposed parking structure. I also intend to direct a portion of Port profits as investment into economic and quality of life improvements of neighboring Port communities. I want every King County property owner to be treated like owners of the Port and share in Port prosperity.

Climate Action Now & A New Green Economy – We need to have our Port at carbon neutral by 2030 and not 2050. We have some of the smartest people on the planet living as colleagues, friends, and neighbors who can come together to innovate our way to CLEAN ENERGY solutions to Climate Change and in the process create a new green economy.

Ending Systemic Racism – We as a society had a reckoning when witnessing George Floyd’s murder at the knee of law enforcement. This is the time to end systemic racism within our institution. I will help the Port with this process.

And lastly, Honesty: I intend to be a model for other politicians as I will not lie to you about what is going on at the Port. I am disgusted by elected officials who knowingly lie to us for political gain or out of political cowardice.

I humbly ask again for your vote and support for our race for Port of Seattle Commission, position #1.

With Gratitude,

Norman Sigler
